September 15
th, 2013 is a notable date in the history of Kassel. A Pageant was organized by the city council and was presented under the motto “Colorful and warm Kassel”, which was the culmination of the ten-day Festival that marked the 1100th birthday of Kassel City. Since its birth, there have been about 2000 events that took place. We are happy to have been part of the 2013 celebrations to mark the occasion. The preparation for this event started for us almost a year before, when the organizing committee of “Kassel 1100” wrote us a letter, inviting us to participate in the festivity. We considered it as something worthy of emulation and duly complied with their request and rules. Initially, we had wanted to represent solely the Edo Community in the gala while choosing the motto of our parade as: “Masquerade”. But the notion was shelved and was decided that it would be a better idea of putting all Nigerians under one umbrella for the occasion. However, the organizing committee of the event decided that each community should be represented on a different platform. The reason proffered was, that people would be able to see the different cultural heritage from the diverse communities that would be on display on that day. Furthermore, it would project to the spectators the degree of Kassel`s integration.
Parade attires were provided for members and information materials were printed and given out to spectators along the streets. By and large, the D-day was so marvellous; it turned out to be more successful than what we had anticipated. The parade came into the middle of the city, with the participants coming from different directions: North, South, East and West. The procession lasted for about five hours and was full of jubilation. It was a very colourful display of various cultures and the weather added to the beauty just like the Hessen tag which was held previously. The beats of African music was heard and felt far and wide. The Drummers and Dancers were all in a joyful frenzy as the music was played. Consciously and maybe unconsciously as well, the spectators were also engulfed in the rhythm of our music and wiggled with it.
The TV and newspapers were around to capture the event. We appeared on their footages and some of us were called by our relatives at home, to inform us that we were on Television. A local Newspaper “Extratip”, displayed our dancers with masquerades on their subsequent episode which was published on Wednesday the 18th of September 2013, on page 17.
We are delighted to have been a part of this great event and the opportunity to contribute our quota to the wonderful picture of Kassel city.
Finally, we received a letter of appreciation from the organizing committee thanking us for our participation and performance. We want to thank everyone who contributed to this great accomplishment both in the arrangements and presentations during the event. We are indeed grateful.
